Munich
Theatre - There are about fifty-eight theaters
located in the city of Munich. Every single evening
somewhere in Munich a theater is alive with acting
or performing. Munich offers classic, and modern plays
for viewing. You can find Operas in the German language
or other European languages. The majority of all plays
are done in the German language. This is wonderful
if you speak the language but still interesting if
you wish to view a production. Just because you may
not understand the words, the sets and acting can
still reach you. There are also musicals, ballets,
movies and concerts being preformed in historic theatres.
From the Broadway hits, to the local
plays, Munich has something to offer every theater
lover.
Some larger theaters allow you to Buy Tickets
in advance online. Others have specials through
hotels, or you can just stop by the box office. Don’t
be surprised if there is a dress code. This is worth
checking out at the box office, or with your hotel.
Some theaters don’t allow jeans and sneakers
to be worn. While in American we are use to receiving
programs at a theater productions in Germany you will
need to buy one for a few Euros. Outside the performing
hall there may be a list of the cast members and a
small description of the performance.

way to the Nationaltheater. The Nationaltheater
is located on 2 Max-Joseph Platz. The city buses and
underground trains have scheduled stops here. For
those travelers that come by car, there is a parking

The Cuvillies Theater is used year
round for all sort of productions but mostly Operas.
During World War II, some of the theatre walls were
destroyed. The theater has been reconstructed, and
during the daytime visitation is allowed. The theater
is located on 1 Residenzstrasse. The parking garage
is located next to the theater, and you may receive

Munich has a large collection of Cinemas
and Movie Theaters. The majority of movies
are in German but they do have American films with
German subtitles. The German made movies do not include
English subtitles. It is possible to find small movie
theaters that show cult classics or European independent
movies. For these movies the subtitles would be in
the German language. While there are cinemas that
offer English subtitles but usually only during odd
hours in a day. The Museum Lichtspiele
is a small movie theater where you can view the blockbusters
and the independent films of Europe. The cinema has

One of the modern theaters is known as the Fastfood
Theater. It was established in 1991 by Munich
theatre students. They approached the art of theater
with a new mind set. They interact with the audience
and put on a one of a kind performance. This theater

At the Ludwig-Maximillians University
in the English department is a drama group. They try
to put on two plays per year at the end of their semesters.
They have become very popular and large audiences
attend the productions. Each semester there is a new
production, and contacting the school would be best
way of finding out what they are planning. These plays
are done in the English language.
