Marienplatz
is located in a center area of Munich. This
pedestrian only zone can feel like a mini city. There
is plenty to do and see. The Marienplatz offers you
a smaller view of Munich, the old buildings, restaurants,
festivals and shopping. There are some museums located
here also.
During the Christmas season there is a Christmas
Market that comes to the square. The Germans
call it the Christkindmarkt. It starts on the 28th
of November and ends on Christmas Eve. This is one
of the oldest festivals around dating back to the
14th century. The Marienplatz hasn’t always
been home for the Christmas Market. It wasn’t
until 1972 that the market settled into the heart
of Munich. Thousands of Germans, and tourists gather
for the tree lighting. The Market
is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 8:30pm. On Saturday
they are open from 9 am to 8:30pm. Sunday the market
opens at 10am until 7:30pm and even on the 24th of
December the market is open from 10am to 2pm. Vendors
sell handmade German items, ornaments, and other Christmas
decorations. The food is a slice of Germany, you can
find sausages and bratwurst, backed apples and roasted
nuts. The Gluhwein which is a mulled wine is there
to warm you up on the cold winter nights. You can’t
go to the market without enjoying a cup of the wine.
Besides the Christmas Market, other festivals and
markets come to the Marienplatz.
There is always something going on. Walking around
you can find cafes which sell Bavarian treats, and
wonderful cups of cappuccinos. This is one of the
places where you can see a little bit of history,
do some shopping and enjoy a great meal.
